Support independent journalism.
Introducing Toronto’s first crowd-funded columns on Signal Toronto. This is a space exclusively for our journalists, activists and opinion writers to publish their work though reader support. We’re launching this idea with two of TOpoli’s finest, Matt Elliott and Neville Park. Money raised through subscriptions to their columns will go toward paying them, the costs of production and supporting columns by newer voices on Signal Toronto. In essence, they write and we publish if people contribute.
Signal Toronto publishes columns by people who care about the Toronto. We publish ideas about Toronto that are outside the box, that push boundaries of legacy and tradition. We publish stories about diversity and inclusivity. We publish stories that hold politicians to account for their decisions and positions of power. We publish stories on the democratic process at city hall that that you’ll find on Signal first and may not read anywhere else.
Support our columnists and help publish their important analysis about municipal politics and policy. Your contribution will be an important part of Signal Toronto, while funding the writer’s work and independent journalism. Some recent examples of Matt Elliott’s articles on Signal Toronto:
- Forget the mayoral race, it’s Toronto’s council races that will determine the shape of our city
- TOcore’s Great Streets plan can correct mistakes from the past, and help put Toronto on the road to achieving Vision Zero
- Lack of Scarborough subway scrutiny makes way for a subway sequel on Sheppard
- By-election or bust: council should stop appointing people to fill vacancies
- Toronto chose cheap parking over car sharing, so maybe it’s time for a vanner revolution
Subscribers to the columns will be the first to know about new ones and will receive them by email before they are published online. Readers may request to have the column printed and mailed to your home address.
All contributors to Matt Elliott’s column who give more than $100 in July will receive a password-protected video version of one his columns, featuring the author. All contributors to Signal Toronto’s expansion who give more than $500 in July will receive 30 days of advertising space on the site between now and the municipal election (timing and acceptability of advertising to Signal Toronto’s discretion*).
Please help us turn Signal Toronto into a sustainable platform for quality reporting and analysis on democracy, municipal politics and policy at city hall.
