City Council meeting, June 2016
Did city council just ask Toronto Police to spend more money? City council passed a motion asking the Toronto Police Services Board to provide hate-crime stats in Open by Default format and to be placed on the city’s Open Data website. However the first rule of raw data for the city’s Open Data Portal is privacy, and the process of making sure individuals are not identified takes resources. University of Toronto’s Akwasi Owusu-Bempah says more race-based data is always a good thing, but he’s leery of doing it on the police’s dime. “My concern is that we already have an extremely large police budget, and the last thing that we want to do is have the police performing more functions that agencies outside of the police could actually do,” he said. The request will go to the Toronto Police Services Board to ask the Chief Mark Saunders to consider.
